Idea semplice ma allo stesso tempo efficace presentata da Nathan Smith in PNG overlay.
Si sfrutta una PNG trasparente che fa da cornice alle immagini.
Grazie ai posizionamenti assoluti CSS la PNG semitrasparente viene disposta sopra l'immagine.

Difetti della tecnica :
IE fino alla versione 6 non supporta le PNG trasparenti, ma si può rimediare utilizzando la soluzione proprietaria filter per estendere la compatibilità a IE5.5 e IE6.
